The Fast 2010

Cross River Church will begin a 30-day, church-wide Daniel Fast on January 3rd.

30 Days of Fasting and Prayer from Cross River Church on Vimeo.

What is Fasting?
● Biblical fasting is abstaining from food and or drink for a period of time to focus on spiritual growth.
● Too often, the focus of fasting is on the lack of food, however, fasting is not intended to punish our flesh, but to focus on God.
● Fasting should not be considered a “dieting method” either. We shouldn’t fast to lose weight, but rather to gain deeper fellowship with God.

Why should I Fast?
● To draw closer to God.
● To seek His will and direction for our lives.
● To reduce our dependency on natural things while increasing on dependency on God.
● To gain insight concerning important decisions in our lives as the disciples in the Book of Acts did.
● To gain strength to resist sin and temptations that we fight against.
● To receive a spiritual, physical or financial breakthrough.
● To see God bring deliverance, breakthrough and restoration to others.

How do I Fast?
● If you have any health issues, first consult your physician before starting any fast.
● Ask God to direct you on what you should give up so you can fully focus on Him.
● Ask the Holy Spirit show you what He wants to accomplish during your fast.
● Make a commitment before God.
● Ask for His strength to stay the course and complete your fast.
● Ask Jesus to remove any potential roadblocks that could through you off course and derail your fast.
● Make sure that you just don’t just focus on giving up food but on connecting with God on a deeper level through prayer & worship.
● Be sure to read and meditate on God’s word during this time of fasting and prayer. Click HERE for our reading plan.
● Take time to get quiet and listen to what He is telling you.
● Keep and pad and pen handy to write down any direction, insight, or wisdom the Lord may share with you.
● Expect God to touch you, cleanse you, heal you and change you, so He can use you to minister to others when your fast is over.

Types of Fast’s?
● There are numerous types but we will be focusing on the Daniel Fast.

Guidelines for the Daniel Fast.
● In Daniel 1 the Prophet ate only vegetables (that would have included fruits) and drank only water and in Daniel 10 the Prophet ate no meat or any precious breads and he drank no wine. So from these scriptures we get the guidelines for this fast:

Wisdom & Power 30-Day Bible Reading Plan

For Thirty (30) days, beginning January 3rd, we, as a church, will be seeking God’s Wisdom and His Power.

1 Corinthians 1:24-25 (NCV)

God’s WISDOM is greater than the wisest of men.  It’s greater than any problem, situation or circumstance.  It’s undeniable and irrefutable.  There is no problem in your life that God’s Wisdom cannot solve.  How to fix your finances.  How to raise your kids.  How to have a great marriage.  How to restore broken relationships.  How to forgive others.  And the list goes on.  So, in light of this, we are pursuing God’s Wisdom as King Solomon did.  When we do, look at the result:

God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the men of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than any other man… And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. He described plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also taught about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. Men of all nations came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom. (1 Kings 4:29-34 NIV)

Not only do we need God’s Wisdom, we also need His Presence and Power.  God’s POWER helps us to overcome sin and temptations in our lives.  We can’t rely on our own strength; we must rely on His, just as Jesus did.

2 Corinthians 13:4 (CEV)

Our prayer is that you learn how to walk in God’s power…daily!

So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12a NLT)

FAQ

Will I understand the message, even if I don’t know much about the Bible?
Our messages are prepared to connect with people’s lives by using the ageless wisdom of Scripture and presenting it in a creative, yet straight-forward way using video and illustration. The services are designed to be easily understood by individuals checking out what it really means to have a personal relationship with Jesus. (But here’s a secret: Even long-time Christians find these services invaluable to their spiritual and personal growth.

What if I come from a different faith background?
Cross River Church is a non-denominational church and everyone who attends Cross River come from a wide variety of faith backgrounds - Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, etc. Together, we focus on biblical truth and teachings, and pursuing an active relationship with Jesus Christ. You don’t have to be a member of a specific religious denomination to do that.  Click here to see our Mission and Vision or here to see What We Believe.
Question Man

Do I have to dress up?
At Cross River you’ll see lots of people in jeans and khakis and not so many in suits and dresses (but there are some). You’re welcome to dress casually, and come as you are.

Where are the hymnals?
Here you’ll encounter a large variety of worship music styles each week that you can relate to and reflects current culture. The worship team and band lead attenders in upbeat songs of celebration as well as intimate worship expressions to God. Song lyrics are projected on the screen so you can follow along and engage in worship.

How do people at Cross River express worship?
“Worship” involves communicating with God from our hearts. We believe in a variety of different expressions in worshiping God. On the platform, you might see worship leaders clapping or raising their hands while they sing and the musicians playing various instruments. As a Cross River attender, you are welcome to worship God in a way you feel expresses your heart toward him. For some, that’s quietly reflecting on the words, for others, that’s clapping and singing out loud.

Movie clips, drama, and videos in church?
Often it’s helpful during a message to illustrate real life situations through a movie clip, a short dramatic sketch, or a music video. Sometimes these outlets may not be from “Christian” resources per se, but we find secular pieces can also hold great truths about the human condition. We screen the words and subject content closely for use in the worship experience.

Is there something for the kids?
Cross River has a wonderful program for kids, birth through 5th grade. While parents are peacefully enjoying the service, kids can have fun and learn about God at their level. Click here to learn more about our children’s ministry.

Is there something for teenagers?
The junior and senior high student ministry of Cross River is called, Fully Involved Student Ministry (FISM). They meet every Wednesday night at the Fusion Centre (Cross River auditorium).  Click here to learn more about FISM.

What about College and Career?
The college and career ministry of Cross River is called 549.  They meet every Thursday night at the café @ Cross River for a time of devotion and fellowship.  For more information, contact Kaci Byrd @ 850-556-3975 cell or (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Are you going to hit me up for money?
If you are new to Cross River, please don’t feel obligated to give. People will never be pressured to give money here, but regular attenders at Cross River who give, as an act of worship to God, support the many ministries of Cross River Church as well as our numerous outreaches.

What if I’m not even sure I believe in God?
If you haven’t made a decision to accept Christ, but would like to know more about Him, you’re a seeker. That’s a good thing. That means you’re asking questions about spiritual things and how they might relate to your life. You are welcome to explore answers to your questions here.

How do I get involved?
Attending weekend services is a good start, but we hope you’ll move beyond being just part of the weekend crowd. You can further your faith, meet people, and learn more about life as a Christ-follower by joining a group or class and serving in an area you’re interested and gifted in.

Where can I learn more about Cross River?
Be sure to visit our Resource Center in the café lobby and talk to one of a variety of people on deck who can answer your questions or connect you with someone who can. Visit the rest of our website for even more information.

I’m New

Whether you’ve visited several times or just thinking about coming to Cross River Church, we’re glad to have you join us.  Below we’ve outlined some of the things you will experience when you visit, so that you will know what to expect.

Cartoon Guys

Before the Service

Choose a service time:  At Cross River we want to give you options, so we offer two Sunday Worship Experiences – 9:00am and 11:00am. We encourage you to try both to determine which is the best fit for you!

Find the church:  For a map and directions, click here.

Check in your children:  Our Sunday morning kids program is the perfect place for children from birth to the 5th grade.  Our staff and volunteers create a safe, fun atmosphere in which children can learn Bible stories and participate in age-appropriate worship. Parents check in their children and receive a printed nametag and receipt, with a security number for each child. If you’re having trouble locating the children’s check-in, just ask a host or volunteer, and they will gladly direct you.

Visit the Café:   If you have time, stop and enjoy a cup of coffee and connect with other attenders as well as our friendly hospitality team.

Get settled:  As you walk into Cross River Church you’ll notice a casual atmosphere and people of all ages and walks of life. A host will give you a program, which includes church announcements and a note-taking sheet for the message. An usher can direct you to seats in the worship center – or you may sit wherever you feel most comfortable.

During the Service

Worship:  This time is set aside for communicating with God from our hearts. Our worship team will lead us in upbeat, energetic songs of praise for what the Lord has done, as well as more intimate songs of worship of who God is. Everyone worships in his or her own unique way – for many, that means singing and clapping along, and for others it means quietly reflecting on the words. You’re welcome to do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

Message:  Every Sunday, our pastor gives a relevant, down-to-earth, humorous message that is based on Scripture and is designed to be helpful in your everyday life. Many past messages are available on CD in the Resource Center. These messages will help you develop a growing, vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ and apply biblical teaching to your own life.

Tithe and Offering:  Each week Cross River’s regular attenders give their tithe (10% of their income) to the Lord. As a guest, there is no need for you to give. This is an act of worship for our regular attenders, allowing them to thank God for all of the great things He is doing in their lives. It also gives Cross River the means to minister to our community in various outreach capacities.

Kids Programming:  While adults are in the worship center, their kids are listening to their own dynamic interactive message, learning principles that can be lived out all week long. Children are divided into classrooms with age-appropriate teachings and activities, discussing topics that will help them build a solid foundation and a strong relationship with God.

After the Service

Pick up your kids:  If you check a child into kids programming, you will both receive matching ID numbers so that we can be absolutely sure the right kids go home with the right parents. If your child needs you during the service, the number on the sticker you receive will be flashed on the screen in the auditorium.

Check out our Resource Center:   Whether you are looking at a past message series, finding out more information on Life Link Groups or signing up for an upcoming event, the Resource Center has everything you need to keep you updated on what’s going on here at Cross River.

Visit the Café:  If you’d like a hot cup of coffee, sit and talk with friends or family, or connect with other attenders, visit our café before and after each service and our friendly hospitality team will be there to assist you.

Beyond

Get more involved:  Cross River Church provides a wide range of opportunities for attenders and their children to move beyond weekend services and into deeper, more meaningful relationships with Jesus Christ and others. To find ways to get more involved:

Joey and Penny Hipp - Lead Pastors

imagePenny and I both grew up in homes with alcoholic fathers.  I thrust myself into sports and Penny used her love for people and animals to escape.  We met in High School and married after Penny graduated (I was starting my junior year of college).

I graduated with a degree in business and started two companies and we made a lot of green.  Our goal was to be rich and retire by the age of forty (we would have made it but God messed everything up…ha, ha).

We have been in full-time ministry since 1986.  For the first eighteen years we traveled throughout the United States as evangelists and into many foreign countries.  We had a blast.

In 2000 God deposited a dream in our hearts to plant a unique church in Mobile, Alabama.  We carried that dream for four years and then in August of 2004 that dream became reality as we gave birth to Cross River Church.  Now everyday we get to live out the dream!

Unique fact:  I had a hard time deciding whether to be a professional Barefoot Water Skier or a Hollywood Stuntman.  Penny used to get into a lot of fights as a little girl (she was pretty feisty…come to think of it, she still is).

Married to:  Each other since 1980

Children:  Shree’ who is married to Josh & Chelsee’ who just graduated from High School.

Grandchildren:  I know we don’t look it but we have two grandson’s…Brayden & Brody…I know now why they call them grand…

Animals:  An Australian Shepard/Lab named Faith.

What we do for fun:  Go to a movie together most Friday’s (that’s our date day) and spend time with our family, especially our grandson’s.  We can make them rotten, then send them home with Shree’ and Josh…wow, what a way to get them back!

TV shows we watch:  I like mostly movies but we do watch Wipeout, Army Wives, Andy Griffin & Penny loves Reality Shows.

Favorite Movies:  I am a movie buff and there are few that I haven’t seen at least 100 times.  I like Action stuff, Westerns and even Romantic Comedies (don’t tell anyone).  Penny just likes watching movies together no matter what they are.

What we read:  The Bible and Growth books, especially ones with very short chapters.  We like books that speak to us quickly!

What we eat:  Japanese, Mexican, Italian, American, Chinese, Soul food, and Country food (pretty much any kind of food, we’re not too picky).  I love Dark Chocolate and Penny likes deserts made from any type of berries.

What we drink:  I like Water and Diet Coke.  Penny likes those as well as Sweet Tea.

Favorite Color:  I love Red.  Penny likes Turquoise and Brown.

My Passion:  God, Family, People and Alabama Football

Favorite Scripture:  Psalm 27:3 (AMP), One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple.

Byron Appling - Graphic & Media Director

We were tired of not having information up on the website about our good buddy Byron so we decided to hijack his bio.  Disclaimer…the views expressed in this bio are not necessarily those of Byron or Cross River Church but we couldn’t wait any longer so here goes.

Byron doesn’t know where he is from or how he got here…he just woke up one day in Mobile…surprise, surprise, surprise (he must really love Gomer Pile).

Not sure where he went to school or even if he attend school for that matter.  We believe that he was to smart for his own good and his teachers probably kicked him out so that he wouldn’t show them up or embarrass them in front of their classes.  He is one smart cookie.

We don’t know how old he is but he sure knows a lot about everything.  Taking into consideration of how much he knows, we estimate his age at about a hundred and forty-one years old.  That dude is sharp as a tack!

We do know that he loves Jesus in his own way…not sure what that way is but it’s his way.  He is a deep thinker.  Don’t know what he is deep in, but he is deep into something because he mind can be a million miles away.

Unique fact:  Likes everything a certain way except his office…enter at your own risk!

Married to:  Not sure…they call him Casanova.  Girls beware!

Children:  Sixteen…not really but what the heck, we are writing this.

What I do for fun:  Cook Roman Noodles in his microwave…Yee doggie, watch them noodles squirm.

TV shows I watch:  The hardcore stuff…Leave It To Beaver, Andy Griffin, Happy Day’s, Laverne and Shirley and My Three Sons.

Favorite Movies:  He loves The Sound Of Music with Julie Andrews.  I think he has seen it four hundred and eighty-seven times.

What I read:  The books for dummies (how to plant a garden for dummies, how to cook for dummies, etc).

Where I eat:  In his office…that’s why it smells like a pig sty in there.

What I drink:  Dirty water…he’s trying to bronze his skin, he’s tired of being so white.

Favorite Color:  Silver…he’s a Mac guy!

My Passion:  Sleep…enough said!

Favorite Scripture:  John 8:44 where it talks about the Devil being a liar.  He kinda likes saying, “you are a liar.”

Sunday Worship Experience Times

At Cross River we want to give you options, so we offer two Sunday Worship Experiences: 9:00am and 10:45am.

We encourage you to try both to determine which is the best fit for you!

Our Story

imageLiving in Mobile, Alabama, we didn’t necessarily feel from the beginning that this area needed a new church.  We DID, however, feel like it needed a church that is different.  So in August 2004, we held our “Grand Opening” at Elsie Collier Elementary School and began Sunday Worship Experiences for the first time.

Though having church services in an elementary school was a little out of the norm, and at times, difficult, the school was perfect in many ways because of the mission of our church.  From the start, Cross River Church has sought to be a safe place primarily for those disconnected from Christ and the Church; maybe even turned off on church and organized religion, and looking for something different.  From the first day, all of our efforts focused on being a “Church for Everyone.”

During our first year, we saw God change dozens and dozens of lives while Cross River Church grew to over 200 in attendance.  In fact, we began to realize that we were quickly outgrowing the facilities available at Elsie Collier.  So on our first anniversary, we made a risky decision to move a few miles away to Baker High School and into the Concert Auditorium.

At the High School, we began to have even greater influence on our community, especially in regards to the students in our area.  God was also changing the lives of families…families that had been previously disconnected in many ways.  We continued to grow in our influence in the community, but we felt like we would reach a lid at some point, until we were able to purchase property and move on to a permanent worship campus.  So, in early 2006, Cross River purchased an old television studio on Zeigler Circle E near the fairgrounds and began renovations.

CURRENT CAMPUS:  On February 4, 2007 (Super Bowl Sunday) Cross River moved into our current home, the Fusion Centre, located at 601 Zeigler Circle East in Mobile, Alabama.  Through this move we have seen more families touched and are looking forward to what the future holds.

Mission & Vision

Unity is such an incredibly powerful force…and when God’s people come together as a team to achieve a common goal, their unified effort brings divine power and world-transforming moves of God to the earth.

image

Unity occurs when people are united in action and in passion for a common cause.  When this happens, different personalities, gifts, talents and anointings become connected together, and the result is an amazing river of divine power that achieves the supernatural and accomplishes the impossible.

We may be many in number and diverse in personalities and talents but we are ONE in purpose!

Our Mission & Vision
To Help People Discover and Develop their Purpose in Christ.

What We Believe

ABOUT GOD: God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three personalities; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. (Genesis 1:1, 26-27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; I Peter 1:2; II Corinthians 13:14)

ABOUT JESUS CHRIST: Jesus Christ was born of a virgin. He is the Son of God and is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; I Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13)

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT:  The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The believer can be Holy Spirit filled, empowered and led. As Christians we seek to live under His control daily. (II Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16-17; Acts 1:8; I Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13, 5:18; Galatians 5:25; Luke 11:13)

ABOUT THE BIBLE:  The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error. (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:20-21; II Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105, 160, 12:6; Proverbs 30:5)

ABOUT HUMANS:  People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God’s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us were born with a sin nature and are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin.” This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life. (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6, 59:1-2; Romans 3:23)

ABOUT SALVATION:  Salvation is God’s free gift to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith. (Romans 5:1, 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5)

ABOUT ETERNITY:  People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places to eternal existence. (John 3:16, 14:17; Romans 6:23, 8:17-18; I Corinthians 2:7-9; Revelation 20:15)
